Not Sure How I Feel about the big M

Posted in Group:

Hello I'm new to this, so I'm not sure about any of this, however I'm glad their is support.
I just came from seeing my obgyn and he stated I could be in the early stages of menapause. I'm going to see my family doctor later today. But if I am going through it, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I don't know what kinds of questions to ask my doctor. I'm one of those 40 something that is always being told I look like I'm 30. Have to say I might look it, but I'm sure not feeling it. But any ways, I'm just not sure how I feel about going through the M. I've joked about not having periods when I was younger and said things like I can't wait for them to stop, because they were always so painful, but now since it may actually be happening, I'm getting depressed about it. As a person who goes through bouts of deep depression every so often can some one give me some encouraging words on the M if there is such a thing. I'm not ready to accept this part of life, it's a scary thing for me.

You are allowed to feel abivalent about this next stage of your life, but truly it should be embraced not feared. What you need to decide is how you are going to approach the changes, are you going to go the medical route, or the more natural road. You may want to try yoga if you never have in the past, it has been shown to help both menopause symtoms and depression, there are great articles on both if you google both topics in past issues of Yoga Journal. I read a book once by a doctor about the Chinese view on the stages of womanhood and I think the huge difference is how we view aging in our societies. Menopause is hush, hush, along with ever other female "malady." I am proud of my body and when it is ready to change I hope to meet the challenges head on with as much positivity as I can muster.

So glad you found the site!

Hello Lyfe. I too am not looking forward to this stage of my life. I have issues with anxiety and depression. I agree with the response that was posted, that yoga helps depressive symptoms. The other thing I like about yoga is that it helps the practitioner accept her body as it is, wherever she is in her life. It is a very joyous practice. I am 41 and am in perimenopause. I find the irregular periods to be bewildering and inconvenient. I don't know yet if I want to go on birth control pills to regulate it. Keep us updated on how you are doing.
